Saturday March 23rd was the first ever Legacy Night at PWHL Ottawa as part of Women’s History Month.
Some 50 players who played for the Ottawa Raiders, the Capital City Canucks, and the Ottawa Lady Senators in the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) and the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) in the early 2000s were among the special guests. They will be considered alumni of the new team representing the nation’s capital in the PWHL.
As the PWHL hosted some of the many trailblazers in women’s hockey in the city, we are proud that there were connections with the Lady Sens Organisation.
U22 Assistant Coach Sarah Olivier was recognised as a former player with the National Capital Competitive Program (NCCP) and Ottawa Raiders of the NWHL.
Also spotted on the bench was Krista Black the Head Coach of the very first Ottawa Senators Intermediate Team in 2008-09 when the Ottawa Senators Women’s Hockey Club was formed as a merger between the NCCP and the KGHA.
Longtime local Builder of the Women’s Game and former NCAA hockey player Cathy Bureau, took to the ice in the pre-game as the flag bearer. Maybe best known to our U22 players as their scorekeeper, Cathy has been involved with every aspect of the women's game in the city.
For the present, PWHL Toronto had its own link with the Lady Sens as alumni Rebecca Leslie (2014) and Erica Howe (2010) were on the Visitors side. And once again the broadcast booth had a Sens connection as Alum Kenzie Lalonde (2012) called the play by play.
Looking to the future, player Grace Outwater (2024) was highlighted on the TV broadcast as one to watch citing her recent achievement of the 50 Goal mark in the U22 Elite League.
